An historic cemetery hugs the tract that includes Allen-Lee Memorial United Methodist Church. Graves lie to the east and south of the church building among old trees. shrubs and verdant green grass.
Burials have been taking place at what is now Allen-Lee since 1848. Many pioneers rest in the cemetery including the families of Culpepper, Fling, Johnson, Justiss, Lee, Nall, Powledge, Prickett, Spence, Willingham and Wise. The cemetery continues in use today, and church members mark the graves of veterans with flags on patriotic holidays. Neither of the men who gave the church their names -- Young John Allen and Dr. James Wideman Lee -- are buried at the church. Rev. Allen was buried in Shanghai, where he served as a Methodist missionary for decades. Dr. Lee is buried with his family in St. Louis, Missouri, where he was a pastor and community leader. Dr. Lee and his brother placed a marker at the cemetery in memory of their mother, Emily Harris Wideman Lee, who died while visiting relatives in Lone Oak in 1876. We invite you to join hands with us in maintaining the cemetery. Donations to the cemetery fund are appreciated at any time.
