To Kiaya:
On behalf of the whole church, I ask you: Do you renounce the spiritual forces of wickedness, reject the evil powers of this world, and repent of your sin?
I do.
Do you accept the freedom and power God gives you to resist evil, injustice, and oppression in whatever forms they present themselves?
I do.
Do you confess Jesus Christ as your Savior, put your whole trust in his grace, and promise to serve him as your Lord, in union with the Church which Christ has opened to people of all ages, nations, and races?
I do.
According to the grace given to you, will you remain a faithful member of Christ's holy church and serve as Christ's representative in the world?
I will.
To the congregation:
Do you as Christ's body, the church, reaffirm both your rejection of sin and your commitment to Christ?
We do.
Will you nurture one another in the Christian faith and life and include Kiaya in this care?
With God's help we will proclaim the good news and live according to the example of Christ. We will surround Kiaya with a community of love and forgiveness, so that she may grow in her trust of God, and be found faithful in her service to others. We will pray for her, that she may be a true disciple who walks in the way that leads to life.
Let us all join together in profession the Christian faith as contained in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments.
Do you believe in God the Father?
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
Do you believe in Jesus Christ?
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father, he will come again to judge the living and the dead.
Do you believe in the Holy Spirit?
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.
To Kiaya:
Do you desire to be baptized in this faith?
I do.
Let us pray.
Kiaya, I now baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
Now it is our joy to welcome our new sister in Christ.
Through baptism you are incorporated by the Holy Spirit into God's new creation and made to share in Christ's royal priesthood. We are all one in Christ Jesus. With joy and thanksgiving we welcome you as part of our family, the family of God.

Human stories illustrate the truths of the gospel. Starting in Genesis, the stories of people — their strengths, weaknesses and faith — speak to us. History also testifies to those biblical truths. Today we look back in American history as a starting point for our message.
Millard Fillmore (1800-1874) Born in a log cabin, Fillmore came from a poor family and was apprenticed as a cloth-maker. He studied, became a law clerk and served in the New York legislature and the U.S. House of Representatives before being elected vice president on the Whig ticket in 1848. When Zachary Taylor died in 1850, Fillmore became the nation’s 13th president. He wrote, "I was called to the executive chair by a bereavement which shrouded the nation in mourning. However much I may be oppressed by the discharge of the duty, I dare not shrink from it.” Among his accomplishments as president were the admission of California to the Union, settlement of the Texas boundary and debts and abolition of the slave trade in the District of Columbia. He also opened U.S. trade with Japan and expanded trade elsewhere in Asia. The Whig Party was in disarray, and Fillmore was the last president from that party. He ran for president in 1856 on the National Union ticket but never again held public office. A Unitarian, Fillmore died in Buffalo, N.Y. where he is buried. The sitting U.S. president sends a wreath to Fillmore’s grave each year on his birthday, Jan. 7. His 214th birthday also was remembered Thursday at a sold out celebration sponsored by the Aurora Historical Society, which maintains Fillmore’s home, the only one built by a president open to the public. Caroline Fillmore (1813-1881) Caroline Carmichael was born in New Jersey. Some genealogists believe her father, Charles, was distantly related to the Carmichaels who settled a few miles from here in south Coweta County in pioneer days. She had a finishing school education and in 1832 married Ezekiel McIntosh, a widower who was a merchant and a railroad executive. A Baptist, she married the former president in 1858. They bought a mansion in Buffalo and lived happily together until his death. Her library included many signed religious texts, hymnals, a concordance, “The Book of Common Prayer” and five Bibles. Caroline Fillmore has a unique place in American history as one of only two women to marry a former president and the only post-presidential spouse to never live in the White House. Caroline Fillmore is buried with Millard Fillmore and his first wife, Abigail Powers Fillmore, at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Buffalo, N.Y. |
